An Urban legend
Billy Urban of Gilmour Academy has struck out just three times in his entire career. That's one of the reasons why Urban was highly sought after by college teams.
In the end, Urban decided that the best fit for him was St. Bonaventure University in New York.
Urban said there were many reasons why he chose the Bonnies over the likes of Duke, Northwestern and Bucknell.
"I loved the atmosphere," Urban said. "It's a small school like Gilmour. And I have a shot of playing fairly early."
It also didn't hurt that two of Urban's best friends are also playing at St. Bonaventure. Pitcher Andrew Revello of Mayfield and fellow infielder Austin Ingraham of Willoughby South will also be Bonnies.
"We plan on rooming together," Urban said.
Urban has played shortstop and second base for the Lancers. He's also being used as the team's closer this year. Urban said he'd probably play shortstop or third base at the next level.
"It's a big-time program," Urban said. "Everything fit perfectly the coach, the field I love it."
The three players should be able to help each other out as well.
"The comfort level is way up there," Urban said. "I'm not worried about making friends, but that (having two friends joining him) takes away so much pressure."
Urban said he'd at least be given a shot to play in his first year.
"If I can play as a freshman, that would be an unbelievable honor," Urban said.
Urban added that he'll always treasure his days with the Lancers.
"We have such great camaraderie," Urban said. "With a small school, you have closeness. Everybody knows everybody. I love the way everybody supports the team. Few schools bring that to the table. They really embrace their athletes here."
Still, with the GA sitting at 8-3 the Lancers' goal is to finish off what they started last season when they reached the Division IV state semifinals....
