Royalton graduate Mayer competes in Ford Ironman
Marc Mayer, a 1996 graduate of North Royalton High School, was never very athletic. Playing cornet in the band was the only time he spent on the football field.

Here's a nod to a few more exceptional players. Shaniqua McGinnis of Shaker Heights finished her career by taking second in the 400 meters at the Division I state meet. Caitlin Hartnett of Solon was second in the 800 and Ashley Rockwood of Beaumont third in that event.

Standout performances spur Bearcats

St. Ignatius falls to Culver in hockey tourney final
BROOKLYNIn one of the few high school hockey tournaments to conclude on Sunday, St. Ignatius fell to Culver Academy of Indiana, 2-1 in the title game of the St. Ignatius Christmas Hockey Tournament at Brooklyn Recreation Center.

Tough start continues for struggling Viking boys
The Villa Angela-St. Joseph boys are off to a tough basketball start after dropping a recent contest to Madison, 54-41. The loss lowered the Vikings' record to 1-5 while the Blue Streaks are 5-2.

The Mayfield girls won their sixth straight basketball game as the Wildcats took down Eastlake North, 70-60, on Saturday night.

Year brought several titles to Lorain County schools
Many championships were won and several individual honors were bestowed in the year just ended, but student-athletes in Avon, Avon Lake and North Ridgeville should expect even better things to come.

Yellow Jacket men defeated by Wilmington College
Junior guard Tyler Ledford scored a game-high 19 points and led three double figure scorers as the Wilmington College men defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 73-68, in an Ohio Athletic Conference basketball game in Wilmington.
