Nordonia boys basketball team defeats Chagrin Falls
by
Mike Holzheimer
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 10:02 PM
MACEDONIA- It was billed as the "Foundation Game" for both the boys basketball teams from Nordonia and Chagrin Falls High Schools
In 2008, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has estanlished a special "Foundation Service Week" for participating schools to select a community service project. Nordonia and Chagrin Falls teamed up to support the families of Chagrin student Quinn Clarke, and Nordonia student Josh Golobek, both young boys battling cancer.
All proceeds from Wednesday night's game went to these special families currently in need of help. Special raffles were also held to further assist the total financial contribution. Both Quinn and Josh were special captains for the evening, and were treated to a lot of action.
In the end, it was the Knights prevailing over the Tigers, 59-38.
Sophomore Nick Robertson led Nordonia with 11 points, while senior guard Justin Wisniewski contributed with nine points. Junior Demetrius Craig and seniors Teddy Simko and Zack Lewis all had eight points with senior A.J. Janezic chipping in with seven markers.
Chagrin Falls' sophomore forward Sam Schiferl led with 12 points, while junior forward Connor Clegg reached the scoring column with nine points.
Nordonia officially opens the season Friday at Copley, while Chagrin Falls travels to Independence on Dec. 10.
Euclid: Quick-thinking bus driver saves passengers from train collision
by
Jeff Piorkowski
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 5:35 PM
A train collided with a bus this morning on Chardon Road but, thanks to a fast-thinking bus driver, there were no injuries.
Euclid Fire Capt. Will Anderson said the crash occurred just after 6 a.m. The bus stalled on the tracks and the bus driver ushered the 8-10 passengers on board off the bus.
"The bus wasn't torn in half like you see in a lot of pictures when a train hits a vehicle, which leads me to believe the train's engineer saw the bus and was slowing when he hit the bus," Anderson said. "The bus did have severe damage."
RTA spokesman Jerry Masek was unavailable for comment.

Parma: Rego's at York and Sprague to close
by Joanne Berger DuMound
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 4:15 PM
NORTH ROYALTON -- Rego's Market has closed its stores in Brunswick Hills and North Royalton. The Strongsville store at Bennett's Corners remains open.
"It's the failure of the banking institution in providing us financing," said Sal Rego, partner and owner with wife Tammy Rego. "I have been looking for financing. I found only one 'friendly' bank. That was U.S. Bank but I didn't hear back from them. We had to close our doors."
The Brunswick Hills store opened in June 2007 at Marks and Center roads. It closed last week.
This week, shoppers at the North Royalton's Rego's at Sprague and York roads can buy items at 50 percent off. Once those are gone, so is the store. It opened in April. The former Tops store was renovated into Rego's largest market at 52,000 square feet.

by Joanne DuMound
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 3:26 PM
Olmsted Falls school officials plan to be more proactive in showing cost-savings measures they already incorporated before residents head to the polls Feb. 3 to vote on a 9.9-mill operating levy.
"We don't blow our own horn," said James Weisbarth, board president. "We take things for granted."
Other members agreed with him.
"I would put it right out there for all to see," said Frank Pedicini.
The members then unanimously approved putting a 9.9-mill continuous operating levy before voters Feb. 3.
