HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY: North Olmsted runs record to 4-1 in Red East; tops Shoremen
by Norm Weber
Saturday January 03, 2009, 10:42 PM
Playing on a bum knee, Chad Murphy registered a hat trick in limited playing time to lead North Olmsted to a 5-0 win over Avon Lake this afternoon on the ice in the North Olmsted Recreation Center, in a Red Division crossover game.
The Sun Hockey MVP of two years ago scored two unassisted goals and one that he received assists from Mike Minch and Ryan Sutton for his sixth hat trick of the season. Mike Konyesni and Brandon Hammermeister scored the other two goals. Sean McBride also had an assist.
"We don't worry about anything but the league," NO coach Tim Murphy said. "As far as we are concerned, we are 4-1 right now. We don't worry about tournaments, because people aren't throwing their best lineups out there. Heck, we skate four lines in the tourneys."
North Olmsted is 3-for-3 in tournaments, including a title earlier in the week at the Trinity Christmas Tournament.
"It used to be that if you won the Trinity or Thornton Park tournaments, you really had something," Murphy said. "Now those are just to get guys more playing time. We only care about our division and the Southwestern Conference tournament."
Both the Shoremen (0-4, 2-10) and Eagles (4-1, 16-1) will be in the SWC tourney Martin Luther King Weekend.
North Olmsted had five power-play opportunities, all of which AL killed.
"One area we have done well in is killing penalties," AL coach Brent Figueira said. "I would like to see us take some of the energy we use so well in killing power plays into even-strength situations and score some goals and play better defense."
Brenden Maye registered his fourth shutout of the season. Logan Galati saved 39 shots for the Shoremen.

Saturday January 03, 2009, 10:40 PM
Lutheran West is now 2-0 against arch-rival Brooklyn with one more meeting to go after this afternoon's 45-41 win in Brooklyn.
"We played them a lot closer than we did last time when we lost by 30 (at the Elyria Catholic Christmas Tournament)," Brooklyn coach Kristen Field said. "Our Achilles Heel all year has been fouls and today was no different."
The lead changed hands several times, but key free throws late in the game by Aimee Carpenter made the difference. Carpenter had a game-high 25 points. Brooklyn is now 2-5 and West 5-3.
Laryssa Byndas had 13 points while cousin Becca Byndas had nine for Brooklyn.
