What is the sound of one hand clapping? I think we can safely cross a Jonas Brothers concert off the list of possible answers to that ancient Zen riddle.
The ultra-catchy pop-rock of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas was amped up loud when they brought their Burning Up Tour to Blossom Music Center for a sold-out gig Friday evening. It had to be, lest the music be drowned out by 20,000 ecstatic showgoers, mostly girls in their tweens and teens.
It felt like summer's last gasp -- and summer went down screaming its lungs out.
Days, weeks and months of pent-up anticipation erupted into a primal squeal - AAAIIIEEEEE! -- as the JoBros announced their arrival with "That's Just the Way We Roll," a sticky-sweet battle cry for a new generation. "Where would we be if we couldn't dream?" they sang.
Joe, 19, handled lead vocals with aplomb, between flicks of that glorious mane. Kevin, 20, revealed himself to be a budding guitar hero. And Nick, 15, played a bit of everything, including drums on a fun cover of Shania Twain's "I'm Gonna Getcha Good."
These precocious overachievers didn't have to rely on hits by others, however. They had plenty of their own to stoke the crowd, including "Hold On," "Year 3000" and "S.O.S.," which brought the concert to a close nearly two hours after it began.
Their main four-piece backing band was bolstered with an eight-piece string section.
Feeding off the energy of the glowstick-twirling masses, the brothers cavorted on a multi-tiered stage flanked by two curving ramps. They also strutted down a long runway extending into the audience, where a sea of little hands reached up for a piece of their idols. They might as well have been faith healers.
In the middle of "Still in Love with You," the JBs grabbed blasters to anoint fans with foam.
All that devotion was not misplaced. Kevin, Joe and Nick write much of their own material, which makes them eminently more likable - er, better make that lovable (sorry, ladies) -- than your average prefabricated Top 40 sensation.
"Has anyone built me a birdhouse yet?" Kevin quipped. The cognoscenti immediately recognized the reference to "Camp Rock," a Disney Channel movie starring the JoBros. They performed a handful of selections from the soundtrack, including "Gotta Find You" and "Play My Music." Joining them for "This Is Me" was "Camp Rock" co-star Demi Lovato, who shared crowd-warming duties with the Veronicas.
The JBs also showcased no fewer than nine songs (including "Burnin' Up," with a rap cameo by their bodyguard, Big Rob) from their latest album, "A Little Bit Longer." It debuted at No. 1 this week on the Billboard album chart.
Nick accompanied himself on piano as he sang the title track, a power ballad peppered with motivational remarks about his struggle with Type 1 diabetes.
Toward the end of the night, Kevin, Joe and Nick rose 20 feet into the air on pillars to serenade us with "Hello Beautiful." Clearly, they're not afraid of heights. Good thing, too, because the way their career is going, the Jonas Brothers might as well get used to the view from the top.
SET LIST: "That's Just the Way We Roll," "Shelf," "Hold On," "BB Good," "Goodnight and Goodbye," "Video Girl," "Gotta Find You," "This Is Me" (with Demi Lovato), "A Little Bit Longer," "I'm Gonna Getcha Good," "Still in Love with You," "Tonight," "Year 3000," "Pushing Me Away," "Hello Beautiful," "Love Bug," "Can't Have You," "Play My Music," "Burnin' Up"
ENCORE: "When You Look Me in the Eyes," "S.O.S."
Here we go again. Another teeny bop band that will fade by this time next year. Remember Hanson? Right, nobody does. Screamy meamy girls who love the group "because they're so CUTE!!" know crap about music yet the media treats this as a big story. These same critics bemoaned the announcment of the last Rolling Stones tour by saying how old they were and making dinosaur comments. Jonas Bros. will be gone in a year.
Im so tired of MSM running story's of 12 year old's that have their wardrobe, songs, lyrics, tour dates, public appearances, interviews, album releases, merchandising ect... all invented by 50 year olds that tell them what to do and how to do it. they are about as original as a cover band. Im sure it appeals to 12 year old girls but come on PD are you trying to appeal to 12 year old tweens? its pathetic. Is this why you wanted to do with all you years of school? cover the Jonas Bro's?
Did any one see the pics the PD ran of them at the Rock hall? they looked bored out of there minds.
ugh it must have been a REAL slow week.
I wish there was a news paper that ran story's of substance, rather then artificial story's that nobody cares about. don't believe me then I would assume there would be more then 1 comment other then mine...
According to the headline, Disney now controls the changing of the seasons.
Great job on the article and the video. I really enjoyed reading it and the video was really well put together.
I loved the opening paragraph.
And to the above comments; everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But, the Jonas Brothers will be around for quite awhile. You can either accept it or post comments whining.
The choice is up to you.

Ah, the hypocritical Jonas Brothers, who supposedly want to wait until they're married to have sex. With the crowd they're attracting and hanging out w with..yeah right.
I wonder if Nick Jonas was wearing his purity ring when Miley Cyrus send her half-naked shower picture to him..perhaps he was wearing it when he (rumored) leaked the picture.
Hypocrite. Since he's so supposedly pure, he will probably end up having sex with someone, not wear a condom, and get her pregnant. Hopefully, he'll be a better guy than Bush supporter Jamie Lynn Spears' guy, who seems to be a dumb redneck.
Thanks to the Jonas Brothers, the local banks wont be getting the ala carte attention from the Plain Dealer for a long while.
A well informed musical critique of the Jonas Brothers should of went like this: The Jonas Brothers don't do anything particularly well, their melodies, chord changes and rhythm aren't inventive. Lyrically cliche and artistically unimaginitive this groups appeal rests solely on their image. Predction: they'll be nowhere in 10 years. Unfortunatey, Jon Soeder was unable to shed light on the poor taste of the Jonas Brothers and their fans.
Who gives a crap if you don't like them? The Jonas brothers are exactly as advertised; a bunch a cute "boy next door" types that can sing. If people enjoy them, let them enjoy them! If they are gone next year, so what? There will be someone else there to take their place.
