Green Wave baseball team finding its groove on field
Holy Name baseball coach Don Smith is starting to see elements that helped propel the green Wave into regional play last spring come together,.
Smith saw good pitching and timely hitting come into play recently with HN getting a pair of victories against North Coast League foes Padua, 6-4, and Villa Angela-St. Joseph, 10-4.
Against the Bruins, Shane Sullivan was sharp on the mound, allowing six hits in six-plus innings pitched, while Alex Gnezda and Gordy Egan supplied all of the offensive power. Gnezda collected two hits and two RBIs while Egan had two base knocks including a home run.
Brett Sullivan chalked up mound honors against the Vikings, working five innings en route to the win, while relief help came from Dylan Mannion, who pitched the final two innings.
Trevor Smith went two for two with a pair of RBIs, while Kyle Vozar had a single and two runs batted in. Tony Connacher had a double and three runs scored.
Staying in NCL play, the Namers could not maintain their conference supremacy as Lake Catholic handed Smith's ballclub a tough loss, 3-2 in eight innings.
Kurt Babin threw four strong innings on the hill with relief help coming from Anthony Smith, who tossed three scoreless frames while scoring two runs. Tom McCarthy had an RBI hit as well.
In a doubleheader against Medina Highland, Holy Name managed a split, dropping the opener, 5-4 while coming back to win the nightcap, 1-0.
In the first game against the Hornets, McCarthy gave up three runs in three innings while Mike English gave up a pair of runs in three frames. Trevor Smith recorded two hits including a double and two runs scored, while Gnezda contributed an RBI double.
