Michigan elk licenses slashed as herd shrinks

Fewer Michigan elk will be killed during the 2010 elk season if a proposal before the state Natural Resources Commission this week is approved at its April meeting, reports Howard Meyerson of The Grand Rapids Press. The fishing report is very slim today, but has lots of promise for next week. The ice fishing season has been shut down by warm weather, with unsafe ice everywhere. The steelhead trout streams of northern Ohio are all high and muddy, but the warm rains forecast for the next couple of days should lure trout up the streams and kick off some great fishing next week. Hudson artist wins Ohio duck stamp contest

A painting of a red-breasted merganser by Hudson artist Joel Rogers won this year's Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp competition at the recent Ohio Ducks Unlimited convention. The artwork was selected from a field of 23 original paintings and will appear on Ohio's duck stamp in 2011. Full story »

Lake County has great river access for steelhead trout fishermen: The Great Outdoors

Northeast Ohio is one of the top locations in the nation for catching steelhead trout in winter and spring, but a roadblock to success can be finding a stretch of river or stream where you are allowed to cast a line. The Lake Metroparks, home to the Chagrin and Grand rivers, has quietly acquired open spaces along the rivers with fishermen in mind. Full story »
