Fewer Michigan elk will be killed during the 2010 elk season if a proposal before the state Natural Resources Commission this week is approved at its April meeting, reports Howard Meyerson of The Grand Rapids Press. The plan calls for issuing 230 elk hunting licenses -- 150 fewer than in 2009. Full story »

The fishing report is very slim today, but has lots of promise for next week. The ice fishing season has been shut down by warm weather, with unsafe ice everywhere. The steelhead trout streams of northern Ohio are all high and muddy, but the warm rains forecast for the next couple of days should lure trout up the streams and kick off some great fishing next week.  Full story »

Ohio walleye fishermen are anxiously waiting for the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to meet in Windsor, Ontario on March 25-26. The committee's estimate of Lake Erie's walleye population will be used to allocate Ohio its share of the toothy fish in 2010 as Buckeye fishermen bicker over how the seasons and limits should be set.  Full story »

Northeast Ohio is one of the top locations in the nation for catching steelhead trout in winter and spring, but a roadblock to success can be finding a stretch of river or stream where you are allowed to cast a line.
