Tropical storm floods homes, crews rescue trapped residents
Port St. Lucie, Fla. -- Emergency crews launched airboats into submerged streets Wednesday to rescue central Florida residents trapped by flood waters from Tropical Storm Fay, which soaked the state for a third day. Hundreds of homes were flooded in areas of Brevard and St. Lucie counties. The storm could dump 30 inches of rain in some areas of Florida and the National Hurricane Center said up to 22 inches have fallen near Melbourne, just south of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Coast. By Wednesday evening, the storm's center had moved over the Atlantic Ocean, and forecasters expected it to strengthen slightly before turning toward the mainland.
