Lewis, Conley share lead in Celebrity Bracket Challenge

    by From staff reports
    Monday March 24, 2008, 7:02 AM

We aren't surprised when Browns running back Jamal Lewis runs over a linebacker or flattens a helpless safety. But we can't help be ing surprised Lewis picked Davidson College to reach the Sweet 16 - and it did.

On the strength of Davidson's upset of Georgetown on Sunday, Lewis pulled into a tie with former Ohio State point guard Mike Conley for first place in The Plain Dealer's second annual Celebrity Bracketology Challenge. With 220 points, Lewis and Conley lead the Cavs' Daniel "Boobie" Gibson (205) and the Indians' Grady Sizemore (180).

Conley, who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, led after the first round as he correctly picked 24 of the 32 games. Lewis had 20 winners in the first round, Gibson 21, and Sizemore 18.

The Final Four selections of each participant are intact except for Conley (Georgetown).

Sizemore is far from out of it. The Tribe center fielder has seven of his Elite Eight picks still alive and he's the only bracketologist to have North Carolina winning the title.

Gibson, despite being in third place, arguably outdid Lewis. Gibson nailed 12th-seeded Villanova reaching the Sweet 16, while Lewis' Davidson is a mere 10 seed. Gibson can claim overall bragging rights if his beloved Longhorns win it all. Not only is he the only one to have picked Texas to win it all, he alone has the Longhorns reaching the Final Four.

    Celebrity Bracket Challenge: Mike Conley

    by The Plain Dealer
    Wednesday March 19, 2008, 5:35 PM

With his Buckeyes left out of the NCAA Tournament field, former Ohio State standout Mike Conley went with the team in his new hometown, selecting Memphis to win the national championship in The Plain Dealer's Celebrity Bracketology Challenge.

"I feel like they have the experience with a lot of the older guys and the young talent," Conley said through a spokesperson with his current team, the Memphis Grizzlies. "I know they are hungry because they have been to the Elite Eight a couple of times in the last couple of years. I think they are going to get over the hump this year, make it to the Final Four and take it all."

    Celebrity Bracket Challenge: Grady Sizemore

    by Staff reports
    Tuesday March 18, 2008, 3:08 PM

Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore is the newest contestant in The Plain Dealer's second annual Celebrity Bracketology Challenge.

Sizemore predicted all four No. 1 seeds would advance to the Final Four, and his champion was easy to select. "I picked North Carolina because even on their worst day, they can still beat any team in the country," Sizemore said through an Indians spokesperson.

    Celebrity Bracket Challenge: Daniel Gibson

    by Staff reports
    Tuesday March 18, 2008, 3:00 PM

Like Browns running back Jamal Lewis going with his alma mater in Tennessee on Tuesday, Cavaliers guard Daniel 'Boobie' Gibson pledged his allegiance to Texas, where he played for two seasons, selecting the Longhorns to go all the way as he wrote "Hook Em Horns" on his bracket.

"It's hard to prepare for a team like they have with the way they shoot the ball and the way they get up and down," Gibson said through a Cavaliers spokesperson. "And to me, D.J. Augustin is the best player in the country. When you have the best player in the country on your team, it's hard to lose."

When filling out your bracket, learn from Gibson's mistake. He forgot to fill in one game, but we got his last pick (Gonzaga over Davidson) just before going to press.

    Celebrity Bracket Challenge: Jamal Lewis

    by The Plain Dealer
    Monday March 17, 2008, 1:56 PM

The Plain Dealer's Celebrity Bracketology Challenge is back, and up first is Browns running back Jamal Lewis.

Lewis is among the sports celebrities competing in the second annual contest. Lewis' signed and handwritten bracket is below.

Selecting his winner was an easy choice. Lewis went with second-seeded Tennessee, where he played football from 1997 to 1999.

"I've got to stick with my alma mater, University of Tennessee, to win it all this year," Lewis said through a Browns spokesperson. "They play fast and are tough to beat when they hit their
    3-point shots."
