  • Maple Heights is a hectic five-mile by five-mile square community sandwiched between Bedford and Garfield Heights, just south of I -480. For the average person, Maple Heights usually rings a bell as the home of Southgate USA, the sprawling shopping complex at the corner of Libby and Northfield roads.

Southgate USA is not a mall, but a rambling collection of strip centers containing one of just about every store known to mankind. The sprawl is soon to grow by the size of a Home Depot. And that huge megastore is sure to attract other new business in its wake.

While shopping takes center stage at Southgate USA, modern medicine is more than just a supporting actor. The Southgate Medical Center is home to a variety of specialists ranging from internists to dermatologists.

One word for housing in Maple Heights: affordable. The median home price is about $70,000. Most of the houses are modest and lined up on neat rows on innumerable side streets. New construction is rare. There are also a number of apartment options in Maple Hts., from larger complexes such as Southgate Apartments, to a number of smaller, 10 to 30-unit buildings.

One of Maple Heights' best kept secrets is the Mapleparks system. This chain of city-operated parks, with names such as Benhoff, Southgate and Stafford Park, contain recreation centers, baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, pools and plenty of green grass.

Maple Heights High School serves the 26,000 community residents. The school will forever be defined by its wrestling program, which rose to prominence on the backs of the famous Milkovich brothers in the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, one of the brothers, James Milkovich, is the high school wrestling coach today.

Some businesses of note in Maple Heights: The Wine Cellar Beverage and Liquor Store, for obvious reasons; The Record Exchange, where you can trade in all the CDs you're tired of; the huge Atlantic Gun and Tackle shop for outdoor enthusiasts; and McBud's Florist City, famous for their singing radio commercials, heard prior to just about every flower-giving holiday.

Check out ethnically-diverse Maple Heights. It might be singing your tune.
