Hunting Valley is definitely not the cheapest
place to live in the Cleveland area, but those
who believe you "get what you pay for"
probably consider Hunting Valley well worth
the price. It's a quiet east side bedroom
community of upscale homes on spacious
lots, conveniently located near downtown
Cleveland. Doctors, business owners,
attorneys and their families make up a good
percentage of the residents of a community
recently ranked as the second wealthiest per
capita in Ohio and the 112th nationwide.
The village of 900 residents is almost completely
residential: the only business is the Daisy Hill
Greenhouses. "One nice thing about this community is
that because there is no business you don't have a lot
of gathering points so there's less crime,' notes village
police chief Charles Caldwell.
Of course that means there's not much shopping or nightlife
either, but there's still plenty to do nearby. The eight square
mile community is nestled snugly in an area that includes
Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Mayfield, Chagrin Falls and
Chesterland, all of which offer vast retail and entertainment
opportunities. Major streets including Cedar, Fairmount,
Shaker Blvd. and South Woodland all connect Hunting
Valley with the city of Cleveland. I-271 is only about 3 miles
away. "Hunting Valley is unique because you have country
living so close to downtown," adds Caldwell.
The small village has a mayor and council form of government, as well as
a full-time police force, and offers the normal full range of city
services. Fire and emergency medical services are provided under
contract by Chagrin Falls. Of course there's no public school
system in a village of this size; children instead attend
classes in the nearby Orange school district.
