Girls High School Tennis Preview

1. The best player in the area, 14-year-old Lauren Davis, might not be able to play for Gilmour Academy because of an eligibility issue involving her appearance in the U.S. Junior Open, Aug. 28-Sept. 7 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. That would be a bummer for everyone. Well, everyone except the girls who have Division II state title aspirations.

2. With or without the aforementioned Davis, is Gilmour's young team good enough to win the coaches state team tournament?

3. I don't agree with those parents who have their daughters not compete in high school tennis because it will hamper their tennis growth regionally and nationally. The high school season lasts all of three months.

4. When did we become Boca Raton (Fla.) North? With Davis and Willoughby South freshman Kyle McPhillips, we have two of the top-ranked girls in the nation and two bona fide state title contenders. If Davis decides to play in high school, it is possible for the two state champions -- Division I and Division II -- to come from Northeast Ohio for the first time since 1996.
