John Petkovic's 'After Dark Bar Guide': Tip a glass at 168 area nightspots
by John Petkovic/Plain Dealer Reporter
Thursday August 28, 2008, 4:00 PM

Even at home, you're a tourist. Just when you think you've seen it all, here comes another surprise. In my case, the surprise came in the shape of another bar. For eight weeks, I hit 168 of 'em -- you know, one for every hour of the week.
It's part of an online bar guide we're rolling out on Cleveland.com.
But there's another reason I did it: to hit places I hadn't thought about or been to in awhile, if ever. Huck Finn as party animal, I guess. I hit martini lounges; rock, punk and blues joints; wine bars; hip-hop house parties; dance clubs; old, young, workingman and upscale spots -- you name it.
Some said I was nuts: 99 bottles of beer on the wall is one thing, 16,632 is another. But friends who came along -- too many to name -- had a blast, though most tuckered out after hitting five joints.
I got a little beat after 125, but I got a second wind. And I need one, because even after 168 bars, I realize that I'm still a tourist in a city with so many great places.
The online guide includes tons of pictures and entries. Here are some of my "Notes on a Cocktail Napkin":

At D'Agnese's Tomato Grill in Hudson, the crab-stuffed salmon nets critical acclaim.

TASTE OF THE TOWN
It did not take me long to figure out where my feeling of dejà vu came from the first time we rolled into Hudson's Main Street shopping and dining district to experience D'Agnese's Tomato Grill.
I live about a mile from a nearly identical-looking development -- Westlake's Crocker Park. The difference? Crocker Park was carved out of an empty field and made to look like an old downtown. Hudson's development is an old downtown made to look fresh and new, with the same trendy chain stores, BMWs, Hummers and the occasional Prius filling the on-street parking spaces, and restaurants of every fashion providing sustenance for hungry shoppers.
Last call to enjoy summer delights

Identical twins Lindsey, left, and Sydney Boughter, 14, enjoy ice cream cones at the Honey Hut ice cream stand at Huntington Beach in Bay Village.Works up an appetite.
Good. This is the time to seize the delicacies of a season moving out of reach. It won't be long before the sweet corn won't be so sweet, the ice cream so refreshing, or the restaurant patios so inviting.
Do it now. Store up the sunny memories to keep you going through the cold and darkness. You know how long that lasts.
Here are some seasonal treasures to count down.
Chef Zach Bruell transforming former That Place on Bellflower
by Joe Crea / The Plain Dealer

RESTAURANT ROW
Restaurateur Zach BruellA longtime landmark restaurant in the University Circle area is set for transformation. The former That Place on Bellflower will soon reopen as a moderately priced neo-brasserie with a new name.
The man behind the reinvention is one of Cleveland's most creative and exacting restaurateurs: Zach Bruell, chef-owner of Parallax in Tremont and creator of Table 45 at the Cleveland Clinic's InterContinental Hotel and Conference Center.
"I've called for a 60-day deadline for reopening," Bruell said Thursday, Sept. 4. He's confident that the tradesmen and other workers will meet his goal of welcoming guests by the end of October. The architectural firm of Westlake Reed Leskosky is refurbishing the structure, consisting of a pair of circa 1912 carriage houses and a more recent addition.

by John Petkovic
Thursday September 04, 2008, 2:56 PM
Browns season is kicking off and there's one prediction that's a sure thing: Dawg fans will transform into rabid party animals.
You see, I have a couple of friends -- let's call them Frank and Tim, since those are their names -- who predict how the Browns will do every year.
For four years running, Frank has had the Browns at 12-4. Tim, the optimist, says 14-2.
This year they aren't saying anything. Maybe they're being cagey. Maybe it's because their dream quarterback -- CHARLIE FRYE!!!??? -- isn't on the team anymore.
Either way, big expectations for the season, which opens at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, have many a Browns fan on edge. Take off the edge in these joints, before or after or during the game.
It's the Browns Bow-Wow Party Guide:

La Tortilla Feliz finds its inner cha-cha

La Tortilla must be feeling muy Feliz these days.
In this most recent incarnation, the Latin American-themed stalwart on the corner of Auburn and W. 14th St. in Tremont apears to be prevailing with the proverbial third-time charm. Belying its name, La Tortilla Feliz, the "happy tortilla", has not always had the most felicitous existence, surviving two previous iterations and the various challenges any twelve-year-old restaurant that serves an uncommon cuisine will weather.
But now, it appears that the enterprise has found it's inner cha cha with a beat that both Latin and North American aficionados can eat to -- and in a pretty great place to dance in, as well.
