The Village of Glenwillow is certainly small,
only 2.9 square miles, but it packs a treasure
of tradition. This southeast suburb of
Cuyahoga County is the home to
approximately 520 residents. Many of its
residents have lived here their entire lives
and most of the homes stay within the
families.
It's rare that you'll see "For Sale" signs as you drive
through town.
Glenwillow is also rich with history. The Village Hall
on the corner of Pettibone and Cochran roads, has
gone from an old general store; to a schoolhouse; to a
4-bedroom century home; to its current contemporary
structure. Residents are looking to preserve its history
with a proposal in the works for a historic district. Falls
Junction, a historic railroad depot built in 1883, will
eventually be a railroad museum and someday will
serve as a stopping point for excursion trains.
In the early 1890's, Austin Powder with its large
manufacturing complex, was the main source of income for
the villagers. The company built many of the homes for its
workers. Future plans are to incorporate these homes and a
vacant general store as part of the commercial district with
a collection of quaint shops, offices and more residential
homes.
A little-known historical fact about the village is that all
residential homes sit on an acre or more of land. This was
done to preserve the country atmosphere. Glenwillow has
been able to maintain this feeling even though it borders the
ever-growing city of Solon. Glenwillow residents can still sit
out on their porches and listen to sounds of birds and
crickets, and witness deer jumping through the fields even
though busy city life is but a few miles down the road.
