Former Brunswick High assistant Mark Pinzone takes over Holy Name High School football program

Having been around a winning football program such as Brunswick for the past 15 years, Mark Pinzone knows what it takes to win. The former Blue Devil assistant now hopes to carry on that tradition as the new head coach at Holy Name. “I’m real excited. That was a personal goal of mine,” Pinzone said of earning his first head coaching gig. “After walking around the facility and talking to everybody it just seemed like a really good fit.”  Full story »

MEDINA Colleagues, assistants, family and friends of Rich Nowak gathered at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Medina for a retirement party for the former Brunswick football coach and teacher. Plaques and pictures were displayed, videos were shown and stories were shared. Thoroughly satisfied with his tenure at Brunswick, Nowak said he can’t believe it’s all coming to an end.  Full story »

GRAFTON How sweet it is. The “Sweet 16,” that is, and that’s the field of teams the Avon Lake High School boys basketball squad will join this week at the Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center regarding regional play. The Shoremen, playing their best basketball at the most opportune time of the season, turned back the No. 1 seed in Medina at the Division I district championship game at Midview High School. And with solid execution at both ends of the court, Avon Lake brought the district championship home with a huge win over the Bees, 52-46.  Full story »

Brunswick’s boys advanced to the Division I Grafton district basketball semifinals before losing to Avon Lake, 54-44, at Midview High School. The No. 2-seed Blue Devils end the season at 17-5 overall while fourth-seed Avon Lake improves to 17-7 after beating Medina in the district finals.  Full story »

Area athletes return from road trips for Baldwin-Wallace College spring teams

Eight Baldwin-Wallace College sports teams each returned to Berea on Sunday after a successful spring break trip south. The track teams trained in Jacksonville and Orlando, Fla., and then competed in an unscored invitational meet at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. The baseball team had a 4-4 record in Winter Haven, Fla., at the former home of the Cleveland Indians. The softball team had a 6-3 mark at the annual Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Az.  Full story »
