Thursday night's Browns practice blog
by Mary Kay Cabot
Thursday July 24, 2008, 10:00 PM
Observations from Thursday's evening practice:
• After his exchange with Jamal Lewis in the morning practice, Shaun Smith bellowed in evening warm-ups: "Please don't touch No. 31!" Smith can be heard jawing much of the practice, to the amusement of fans.
• Rookie linebacker Beau Bell dropped the ball in an interception drill and then dropped to the ground for his punitive push-ups. Fellow linebacker Leon Williams followed suit a couple of reps later.
• Josh Cribbs dropped the first two punts that came his way, but pulled it together and caught the next three or four. He also caught a nice pass from Brady Quinn in team drills.
• First-year cornerback A.J. Davis picked off a deep pass from Derek Anderson intended for Braylon Edwards, and Edwards responded by throwing Davis to the ground. Corner Nick Sorensen came to Davis' defense and shoved Edwards.
• Brandon McDonald picked off a deep Anderson pass off a flea-flicker intended for Edwards.
• Travis Wilson, who's had a good off-season, dropped a deep ball from Josh Cribbs on a gadget play.
• Derek Anderson and Kellen Winslow connected well in team drills, especially on passes over the middle. Quinn, working with the second team, showed good command of the offense in both sessions.
• Running back Jason Wright sat out the evening practice with a minor injury and rode the bike for part of the session.
Come ON Wilson! You need to step up we have to get some production from you this year. Now or never Playa!
Yeah it is called practice. As in "practice CATCHING THE BALL TRAVIS". He doesn't need practice dropping passes; he has displayed that particular skill set for two seasons.
I see Anderson is picking up where he left off. Quinn to Win.
haha, mary kay. don't get me wrong i'm a BQ supporter as well, but babe you and grossi make it too obvious that you are 100% behind BQ's success and DA's inevitable failure. i notice you mention BQ's successes and DA's incompletions, int's, ect... believe you me i also believe BQ has much more to offer.
Boy oh Boy,
DA sure is the future huh, first year corner picking off DA. wonder what number 43 from pittsburgh will do to him? lols. DA you suck.
with Quinn we win.
Cmon guys, give me a break!! The first practice of pre season and you are ready to bench DA and install Quinn as QB because DA threw a couple of pics. I like Quinn as much as the next guy but crudifying a dude after the first practice of the year is insane. I'm more concerned about all the extra curricular activity it sounds like there is going on. The offense and defense already hate each other going into the first practice? That doesn't bode well for team unity.
Cleveland has the dumbest fans of all. You people need to get a clue.
Quinn to win. If our secondary is picking him off, just think what the rest of the league will do. Quinn to win.
clevejohn i second that notion. you cat please some of these idiots. its the second freakin day fo crying out loud. geez
THERES NO QB CONTROVERSY DA IS THE GUY . . .
How many times does the team and organization have to say it to get it through your skulls.
Having two capable starting QB's IS A POSITIVE NOT A NEGATIVE . . .
Sure DA cost us the playoffs last year by tanking in Cincy and his terrible start cost us the Arizona game, but remember the GUY WAS A 6th ROUND DRAFT PICK STARTING IN HIS FIRST YEAR, of course he's gonna make mistakes!!!
All these idiots want to run a pro bowl QB with a cannon arm out of town
kiddfletch
The fact that the offense and defense are not getting along is not necessarily a bad thing. If you have ever played football you know that the first few practices of a new year are testy because most people are rusty, a lot of talking, and others trying to make the team--and may be trying harder than those who are obvious to make the team.
Once the training camp moves along, while the talking may still exist, respect will also be shown. I think that this team needs the talking and prodding. THIS TEAM NEEDS TO HAVE A CHIP ON ITS COLLECTIVE SHOULDER AND START TO IMPOSE ITSELF ON THE FIELD AND STOP BEING PUSHED AROUND. You don't get that with the offense and defense playing paddy-cakes.
Keep your eyes on Kasper. He can catch. He's a guy Travis Wilson better keep his eyes on, too.
I agree oldchuck, and I think AJ Davis is gonna earn a spot as a CB as well. This kid looks good and wants to play. Players are out there playing loose and knoclking rust off. It's called practice for a reason.Actually excited about pre-season this year and see how the Browns will do.
Good luck to all the players!!!!
until than:
Make Mine Brown and Orange!!!!!!!!!!!
DA did throw 4 picks at they end of the year, but I see no body blaming one of the leagues worst defenses for not showing up in every game. The defense sucks and until they step it up the Browns will always be underachievers.
Browns fans are morons!!!
Let me help you out there tm, last year 60% of the games we played the oppositions team gave up more points per game than our defense. The inconsistent play at QB cost the team a playoff spot, regardless of the cincy game. Never should have come down to that.
