It's impossible to drive down any of the main roads that run through
Brooklyn Heights Village and not notice the vast amounts of working and
nonworking greenhouses that dot the area. The village was once known as the
"Greenhouse Center of America." The more than 80-acre "greenhouse district"
is primarily centered on Schaaf Road. The few greenhouses that remain
today in Brooklyn Heights rely mainly on flowerstand plants to sustain
themselves. However, a few still grow hothouse tomatoes which they ship
around the country. When springtime hits the northcoast, residents from the
surrounding communities of Brooklyn, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Heights,
Independence, and Parma flock to this community to purchase their
perennials and vegetables for the summer planting season. A popular
greenhouse establishment is Rosby's Brother's Greenhouse and Berry Farm
located on Schaaf Road. It is here that patrons are able to pick fresh
strawberries and raspberries on their own in a huge field. Richardson's Farmer's Market is
also a popular shopping place for flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables.
Brooklyn Heights is a largely blue-collar community in Cuyahoga County
adjacent to Cleveland and easily accessible from I-77, I-176 and I-480. The
village celebrated its 100th birthday in 2003.
There is plenty to do in this family-oriented community. The Brooklyn
Heights Village Park, at Tuxedo Avenue and West 4th Street, has 13 acres of
fun with two ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, swings and jungle
gyms, shuffleboards, and plenty of open space.
Not only is Brooklyn Heights the ideal place to raise a family, with its
affordable housing on beautifully tree-lined streets, but it is also the
home to many nationally known industries.
Residents of Brooklyn Heights are proud that their community is "country
living, city style." Stop by and take a look for yourself. Pick up some
geraniums while you're there.
