  • In Avon Lake, the lake being referred to is not named Avon, but rather Erie. This community - located in Lorain County where it bumps into Cuyahoga County - is as far North as you can go without diving in the water for a swim. And don't confuse it with the place to the south that goes by the name of just plain Avon.

The heart and soul of the community is the stretch of Rt. 6 that encompasses a rocky curve of Lake Erie coastline. We're talkin' prime lakefront real estate. The homes that sit on the lake side of the road run the gamut from smaller bungalows to magnificent mansions, but try to buy, and you can bet you will pay for the lake view. Believe it or not, there are homes for sale in this prime location, and there are also a number of houses in various stages of renovation and construction.

While the lake view homes are for the price-is-no-option crowd, the rest of Avon Lake offers plenty of housing options that fit into a typical family budget. You can pick up an $80,000 to $90,000 home as well as a home in the high $100s or even 200s. New construction is going on in developments such as Harbor Estates or Westwinds. Vacant land in the north-central part of town will be developed in the future, after city officials initiate a solution to a drainage problem that caused the federal EPA to prohibit construction activity.

Also on Rt. 6 you can find relaxation, entertainment and other points of interest. If you need a place to dock your boat, you can find the Avon Lake Boat Club. Right next door is Veterans Memorial Park, highlighted by a stately structure that houses the Mayor's office. Not only is there a great view of the lake, there is also beach access in case you want to stick a toe in the water. Further to the west, also overlooking the lake, you can find Avon Lake Cemetery - scattered with crooked, weather-worn headstones - the final resting place of many of Avon Lake's earliest settlers.

If you're itchin' for a cold one, try Close Quarters, located on the south side of Rt. 6. You can also stop at the Avon Lake Wine Shop for a bottle of Chardonnay or Merlot, and a bag of wine crackers.

Also on Rt. 6 heading west (if you're driving from Cuyahoga County) is Artstown, a shopping center that features a selection of original artwork, ceramics and other objets de art. Next door is the Artstown Pub, in case you want to sip a drink and discuss art history, the significance of Salvador Dali's mustache or whether a Kostabi original is in fact, original.

For family fun, the Avon Lake Recreation Area is a park with a huge pool, a playground (that looks like the Merry Old Land of Oz carved out of wood), basketball, baseball, tennis and picnicking. Avon Lake may not be at the end of the yellow brick road, but living the good life right on Lake Erie is a mighty nice alternative.
